But an iPad can be risky if, like me, you lack self-control. I think an iPad can be a great tool for note-taking, especially if you invest in a screen protector with a paperlike feel. But also, it's hard to stay focused when your favorite mobile game or Netflix show is just a few taps away. For one, the glass screen doesn't provide the same type of paper-like friction. You're probably asking: Why not just use an iPad and an Apple Pencil? That's a fine method for taking notes, but the iPad has some downsides. (I use a sleeve like this one for my Apple Pencil that attaches to the iPad with adhesive something similar might be a good idea for reMarkable's Markers.) But annoyingly, the Book Folio doesn't have a dedicated slot for Marker storage like the cheaper Folio does the Marker is left vulnerable, secured to the device only by its magnet and not held in a strap or a pocket. Just like the Marker, the simple Folio case can be upgraded to a Book Folio ($99 and up), which has a nicer flip-open cover. Brush options are too limited I do wish there were options for things like a brush pen, stamps, or streamlining. Your Marker strokes are digitized using 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, which makes the experience feel and appear natural, close to the feel of writing with a fine-point Sharpie. Voilà, the text is gone, complete with a barely visible bit of faded text where your old work used to be. Simply flip the Marker Plus over like you would a pencil and rub the end over your mistake. You can also choose to upgrade to the Marker Plus ($99), which is nearly identical to the Marker, save for the sensor on the end that acts as an eraser. The Marker snaps onto the right side of the tablet via a magnet. (Extra tips are included, and each one lasts about two months.) It doesn't have a battery, so there's no need to charge it. The Marker is a hefty and textured stylus with replaceable high-friction tips. The $399 price is for the tablet alone, and doesn't include the Marker stylus ($49) or the Folio ($69) case, though the company is currently bundling those two accessories with the reMarkable 2 tablet, so for a limited time, you can get all three items for $399. On the left of the screen is a toolbar where you can select your brush shape and size, select text, fiddle with layers, or undo recent actions. A few quick taps brings you to a blank page that stands ready for you to fill it with your thoughts and ideas. New documents can be created from different templates: checklists, sheet music, ruled pages, or a grid of dots. Any notebooks and documents you start can be edited, rearranged, sorted into folders. It also weighs less than a pound and features a lovely, paperlike 10.3-inch display.Īfter you wake the device by pressing the single button on the top left corner (and entering your PIN), you're met with a minimal home screen that allows you to choose between existing notebooks and files, or an evergreen, permanent Quick Notes section. That's more than a millimeter thinner than the iPad Pro. The device is thin- remarkably so, measuring just 4.7 millimeters. Simply scrawl away with its dedicated stylus and your thoughts are recorded digitally, leaving you free to keep writing and never worry about running out of pages-or scribbling furiously in an attempt to get your pen to work. When you write on it, the screen even sounds like paper. When I got a review unit of the second iteration (it took a while the device's arrival has been delayed), I realized those redditors were right. Which tablets do you love? There is also a video of this album, by the similar name of Sacred Fire: Live in Mexico, featuring additional songs not featured on the album. The title, "Live in South America", is not correct, as the location of the concert production, Mexico City, is not located on the continent of South America. This album is dedicated to the life of Cesar Chavez. Of the two I can't really pick and choose which I like better, but, if Santana alone is the criteria, then I'd pick this one, "Sacred Fire" as a pure Santana experience.Sacred Fire: Live in South America is an album by Santana, released in 1993. That one was a cavalcade of musicians of different styles performing their own stuff and some of Santana's well known pieces. I reviewed another Santana DVD that was shot here in the Bay Area. Included in this footage are faces of the people of Mexico. Intercut with the concert are small vignettes of Santana performing in and around Mexico City. His classics are played out in this excellent concert footage, which is actually an amalgamation of two different shows. Santana's in his element here, performing his favorites for people who know him best. Wow, how stupid was I? Looking at this concert I kick myself some, but I can still enjoy the experience via a DVD purchased many years later. A job was tossed my way, but I had to refuse it for a variety of reasons. There was a brief and passing mention of a concert that was going to be filmed in Mexico with Santana. They were talking shop with some of my coworkers who were part of the Bay Area music scene, and who also did some film/video production work. Years back I remember seeing a couple of the musicians in this video in passing at a studio I worked at. I only have one more word to describe it: incendido! Though lacking any "extras" whatsoever, this DVD should more than please most Santana fans. No wonder the Mexican audience, to its great credit, is on its feet and boogying for the entire show I wish my usual Jones Beach concert attendees were as unrestrained! This filmed concert both looks and sounds terrific some nice camera work always helps these affairs. Chester Thompson, a staggeringly awesome keyboardist, is given many opportunities to shine here, and Carlos himself, surely one of the most right-on brothers on the planet, excels on every single tune. The songs here range from sweet and pretty ("Wings of Grace," "Make Somebody Happy," "Esperando") to very hot ("Guajira," "Batuka," "Open Invitation") to jaw-droppingly amazing ("Spirits Dancing in the Flesh," which is a perfect demonstration of that escape-velocity ability, "Black Magic Woman," "Toussaint L'Overture"). Still, the joy on stage is almost palpable. I'd like to say that being back on his home turf seemed to energize Carlos & Co., but the fact of the matter is that this is a typically smoking Santana performance these guys always put out 100% wherever in the world they play. Recorded at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City in May 1993, "Sacred Fire" surely does deliver the goods. I'm happy to report, however, that this concert DVD proved to be an adequate consolation prize. I have seen Santana around 30 times now, in as many years, but this year was disappointed by the band's no-show here in the NYC area. Within minutes of hitting the stage, Carlos and his bandmates are usually percolating at an intensity level that it takes most groups hours to achieve.if ever. No band that I know of achieves "escape velocity" faster than Santana. It’s impossible to dart around quickly, and the game requires players to re-explore the entire manor constantly. Further escalating the tedium, the dash mechanic is tied to a gauge that drains and refills slowly after each use. Key items will suddenly appear in rooms already explored, forcing the player to go back and forth. Though, the pacing in Sunshine Manor is unfortunately muddled by somewhat tedious gameplay. That being said, as a game drawing inspiration from 80s horror flicks, it feels appropriate. It’s starkly opposed to the hushed whispers and creaking walls that Sunshine Manor starts with-its head-bobbing 80s style synth that makes each alternate reality unique from one another. Each lingering soul takes the player to different versions of the manor, and in those worlds, the music is fantastic. Despite cartoony 8-bit graphics, the beginning feels like an early Resident Evil with the eerie exploration of a large manor. But are they strong enough to save her friends? And will they be able to escape alive? Image Credit – Fossil Games “Each lingering soul takes the player to different versions of the manor, and in those worlds, the music is fantastic.”įor starters, the atmosphere is spot on. Luckily, Ada has psychic powers to defend herself. Sunshine Manor is a true love letter to classic horror films of the 1980s where you play as Ada whose night of trick or treating turns into a night of terror when she becomes trapped inside the old Aitken Manor. Upon entering though, a mysterious cloaked man drags Ada’s friends away and a barrier blocks her from exiting. With too much adrenaline and sugar pumping through their veins, the kids decide to explore the manor for a spooky adventure. What’s the perfect activity for kids on Halloween night? Trick-or-treating, of course! Ada and her friends visit the creepy Sunshine Manor looking for some candy, but when they knock on the door, it falls open, seemingly abandoned for years. The gameplay, sadly, is a little frustrating. Sunshine Manor is certainly the stylish game I was expecting. However, upon researching the indie, I found a ton of things I liked about it: pixel art, story-driven narrative, inspiration from classic horror games, and 80s music. The game is a prequel to Camp Sunshine, which admittedly, I have not played. I first learned of Sunshine Manor while writing a news article about its release date. There are some similarities that Tavern Keeper shares with its predecessor, primarily the progression system based on servicing increasingly critical customers. They’re great to look at in still images and early concepts, though I’m looking forward to seeing them at their best in action soon. Even the simplest designs that can be found on Greenheart’s website are lively and packed to the brim with charm. GDT was clearly made by loving developers through its addictive gameplay, but Tavern Keeper seems like it will sweep players off their feet through visuals alone. The sprites and animations are detailed, tavern layouts are clean, and the overall design looks like its had a lot of care and attention dedicated to it. Tavern Keeper looks incredibly promising on this front because, from observing early builds, it appears that another layer of character has been added in comparison to GDT. Realistically, it’ll eat away at each of your waking hours once you’ve played it for the first time. Though I called it simplistic, its really just easy to get into and play for hours on end, being only a bit difficult to master. Greenheart Games may sound familiar because of their previous release, Game Dev Tycoon (GDT), a wildly successful, if somewhat simplistic, title that gave them a lot of experience in the realm of micromanagement games. Current estimates from Greenheart Games note that it was slightly delayed from a 2020 release thanks to the COVID epidemic – the efforts of the next few months will determine whether expectations for release are fully met or not. This isn’t their first major venture into a game based on heavy micromanagement, though it is definitely looks as though Tavern Keeper will have a lot more heart, depth, and character to it than their previous titles.Īt the moment, this game is currently still in the development stages and has an expected release date of set sometime in 2021 or 2022. This time around, the developers over at Greenheart Games are currently attempting to provide their take on the genre with Tavern Keeper. While players will have to manage their mission objectives, those who want to sit back and watch their employees and guests proceed throughout their days will be satisfied by Tavern Keeper as well.Building management simulation titles have grown steadily in popularity in the last decade and have been around for over twice that length realistically. Most interactions are much more intricately crafted than one would expect, even at this point in development. While some players may brush off the low-poly art style at first, a lot of work has been put into the game's animations. The world is filled with halflings, orcs, and the like, so from a visual standpoint you can tell the developers got creative with what a fantasy world allows you to do. While none of the gameplay mechanics are groundbreaking for the genre, Tavern Keeper is putting a unique medieval skin on everything and the narrated objectives with stories attached to them will surely keep me engaged. As such, this tavern was quite busy as I had to watch developer Patrick Klug juggle many of the aforementioned elements. Most of the gameplay in my demo took place in the Halflington T avern, a mid-game location. For example, the main quest of the first tavern in the swamp is getting certified to legally sell alcohol. Tavern Keeper will be a bit more narrative based than your typical sim, with each new tavern housing its own missions. While Game Dev Tycoon locked players into one company that got progressed in size over the course of the game, Tavern Keeper is poised to have much more variety in not only location but clientèle and objectives. A spin-off mobile game, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown was released in December. Like its predecessor, it is considered one of the greatest video games ever made. It was tied with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the highest-rated video game of 2011 according to review aggregator Metacritic, and was the recipient of several awards from media outlets, including Game of the Year, Best Action Game, Best Action Adventure Game, Best Adventure Game, and Best Original Score. The game received critical acclaim, particularly for its narrative, character and world designs, soundtrack, and Batman's combat and navigation abilities. Over a year and $10 million were spent on the game's marketing campaign, and its release was accompanied by two music albums one containing the game's score, and the other featuring 11 original songs inspired by the game from various mainstream artists.Īrkham City was released worldwide for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 video game consoles in October 2011, followed by a Microsoft Windows version a month later. The layout of Arkham City has a virtual footprint five times that of Arkham Asylum, and the city design was modified to accommodate Batman's ability to swoop and glide. Rocksteady conceived ideas for a sequel while developing Arkham Asylum, commencing serious development of Arkham City 's story in February 2009. Batman's ally Catwoman is another playable character, featuring her own story campaign that runs parallel to the game's main plot. The player is able to complete side missions away from the main story to unlock additional content and collectible items. Batman can freely move around the Arkham City prison, interacting with characters and undertaking missions, and unlocking new areas by progressing through the main story or obtaining new equipment. The game is presented from the third-person perspective with a primary focus on Batman's combat and stealth abilities, detective skills, and gadgets that can be used in both combat and exploration. He must uncover the secret behind a sinister scheme orchestrated by the facility's warden, Hugo Strange. In the game's main storyline, Batman is incarcerated in Arkham City, a super-prison enclosing the decaying urban slums of fictional Gotham City. Written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini with Paul Crocker and Sefton Hill, Arkham City was inspired by the long-running comic book mythos. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, it is the sequel to the 2009 video game Batman: Arkham Asylum and the second installment in the Batman: Arkham series.
